The Carol Guzy Archive Project

The Carol Guzy Archive Project aims to set Carol’s story in its rightful place in history. Its goals are to preserve Carol Guzy’s award-winning work so it can be studied now and in the future, to shine a light on the trauma experienced by photojournalists, and to develop an archival solution for the devastating loss of photographic history brought on by the rapid decline of the newspaper industry.

Carol met Memuna when she arrived in the US as a four-year-old survivor of Sierra Leone’s brutal war. She had lost her arm in an attack by rebels that killed her mother and grandmother. A deep bond formed between Carol and Memuna and today, more than 20 years later, they remain very close. (5 of 6) – Maternal Mortality in Sierra Leone There are stories that are so painful they’re hard to look at, literally. Carol’s position is that if the people photographed must live it, then the least we can do is look at the images, bear witness to their suffering and do what we can to help. One of those stories from Carol’s archive is about maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where one in 20 women die in pregnancy or childbirth. Another goal of the Archive Project is to preserve all the images from those stories that often get censored in mainstream media. Her love of The Wizard of Oz lead her to document the final years of the last surviving Little People who played Munchkins in the film. (3 of 6) – Haiti Two of the four Pulitzer prizes awarded Carol have been for her work in Haiti. It’s people, their struggles and triumphs are deeply carved into her heart, and central to any effort to document her life’s work. Her images reflect her willingness, really her insistence, on connecting to the places and people she documents. That level of engagement with people in crisis comes at a price. One goal of this project is to give Carol a bigger platform to raise awareness about the prevalence of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) among photojournalists whose work takes them from one crisis to another. (2 of 6) -- 9/11 firefighter funerals Carol describes herself as a long-form documentary photographer, and her work is full of stories that she spent months, even years, documenting. However, the limitations of print newspapers means that with each story only a few images were published. This archive project will make it possible to curate these visual stories fully in a digital format with no limits on the number of pictures other than what it takes to tell the story. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Carol decided to focus on covering the funerals of firefighters. The images in this post highlight a slice of that story. Ironically in a time when photography has become ubiquitous, the work of photojournalists documenting our visual history is at risk of being lost. Newspapers are failing, and those that survive do little to curate the work of their photographers. In this post are a few highlights from Carol’s remarkable career. Behind each image is a story she has documented in detail. Images that are not generally available for viewing, nor are they preserved, archived or curated. We aim to change that, starting with archiving Carol’s work, and in the process we hope to create a model that can serve others.
